Taipei Symposium for the 400th anniversary of Matteo Ricci’s Death was a great international occasion with a meaningful participation from Mainland Scholars. Some 16 countries were represented. My own point has been to discuss the Confucian choice of Matteo Ricci as a way to introduce Catholic Faith. This choice left out other Chinese cultural traditions. It gave Chinese Catholicism a moral turn with a stress on obedience to Church rules. It opened the way to a Humanistic interpretation of Christianity overshadowing its meaning as a history of salvation.
The Taipei symposium was a success thanks to the main organizer Prof. Chen Fangzhong and to the active service of many Fujen University Students.
