沙神父:参观台北故宫博物馆有感

Towards the end of the Taipei symposium, we had an outing to the Gugong, the Imperial Palace Museum where Taiwan preciously keeps cultural treasures from the Mainland. Now the place is crowded with Mainland tourists who can admire what has been saved from destructions. It was an occasion to exchange with Mainland scholars taking part in the symposium. I was happy to meet Professor Xu Minglong who brings new light to the cultural relation east-west in the XVII th Century through a study of Montesquieu. This French philosopher learnt from China not so much through the Jesuits accounts but much more through a Chinese man, Arcade Wang. This man from Fujian came to France with French Missionaries and became an interpreter employed by King Louis the XIVth at the Versailles Royal Library.
