Matteo Riccci could enter China in 1583 dressing as a Buddhist monk. He was accepted as such by the governor of the two provinces

Of Guangdong-Guangxi in his capital of Zhaoqing. But Buddhists in that place did not welcome the Jesuits. Ricci had to move to Shaoguan some 200km north of Canton. There he made a friend with a Confucian scholar who was opened to catholic moral teachings and received baptism. Inspired by this experience, Ricci drop his Kasha in 1595 and dressed up in the garb of a Confucian xiucai.As such, he could take part in scholarly debates in the local academies (shuyuan)and make friends with high officials who could open his way to Beijing.
