Accused of being "bu xiao" Catholics were soon persecuted as an evil cult, not only in China but also in vassal countries which had inherited of the Chinese Confucian culture. It was the case in Korea where the catholic faith was introduced at the end of the XVIIIth Century and in Vietnam where Catholicism became involved in political rivalries in the XIXth century. Colonial interventions of western powers made things worse. The French, in particular, protected Christianity. As a result, Christianity was dismissed as a "foreign religion".
